Here’s a bottle opener from the Moose Jaw Royal Hotel (?circa late 1970s)
I think the lettering reads: “Compliments — Royal Hotel — 69 River St. W. Moose Jaw — 692-4164 — Al & Al Bonesky

What my hamburgers taste like
When I worked at the Royal Hotel, I cooked a lot of burgers. One of the big sellers was a Hamburger Deluxe. It came with a side of fries and veggies.
Here it is: a grilled 1/4 lb patty fixed with: lettuce, onion & tomato, toasted buttered bun, mustard, ketchup, and dill pickle slices.
It resembled and tasted like an A & W Teenburger. If it were an order “to go”, it went into a foil bag just like the Teenburger!.
Variations of the above: Fries with Gravy; Cheeseburger Deluxe. ; a few strips of bacon.
So go have a Teenburger and remember the good times.

This is my id card when I worked on the ship Surabaja. The currency of this era was a handshake, a smile & a carton of cigarettes. Everyone smoked! Cartons of cigarettes “opened doors”.

This is from my time on the ship Tegelberg. Here is my rant on South Africa at that time. Chinese people were not wealthy. Their status in South Africa were as 2nd class citizens. Apartheid was in full effect for Chinese people. If, on the other hand you were Japanese. You would be granted all priveleges enjoyed by a “white” person (because Japanese were affluent).

This is my public food safety certificate.
This letter of reference is also from the same restaurant.

TNT Interview
Name: Chiu Ma
Position: Cargo-ship Seaman
Q How did you get into working on ships?
. Some friends provided a referral. It was a way to see the world and get paid for travelling.
Q What did you study in school?
. I am not an educated man. I received basic public education.
Q Name your strengths.
. A lot of ship work consists of securing items with rope. I picked up a lot of knowledge on tying a multitude of knots. Also, I am pretty good with numbers, that is, I can quickly figure out the sum, difference, product or quotient in my head. Surprisingly I am not adept with calculators. But, with a traditional Chinese bisection abacus I can calculate numbers very quickly. I am almost as fast as a shopkeeper with the abacus.
Q Name your weaknesses.
. In the best of times, & in the worst of times I swear a lot.
Q What is your best character trait?
. Patience.
Q What character trait do you like in others?
. Willingness to help people.
Q Tell us about a favorite ship memory.
. As a Quartermaster on the ms Straat Bali, I thwarted a burglary and received a commendation.
-
Q What was the worst thing that happened to you on a ship?
. I can not remember if we were near Central America or Indonesia, but I relieved the pilot on a shift & I fell asleep at the wheel. Nothing bad came of it and no one noticed but we did go off course for maybe half an hour.
Q What is your nickname?
. One of them is Fatty Ma
Q Who is a sports hero?
. It would have to be Michael Jordan or the Harlem Globe Trotters. This was before the time of China’s Yao Ming.
Q What sport do you enjoy other than basketball?
. Volleyball
Q Your childhood dream job?
. ship-man
Q What is something we wouldn’t guess about you?
. I enjoy manufacturing/preparing food items as a creative outlet. Don’t confuse this with cooking. I like making things like tofu, or egg noodles, or perogies, or shrimp chips. I make these in big batches.
Q What is your life philosophy?
. Work hard. Make lots of money.
Q What is your hobby?
. I collect coins and paper currency from each country I go to.
Q What would you eat for your last meal?
. Ox-tail stew with potatoes and carrots. Fried rice and spare-ribs in black bean sauce (or a T-bone steak with a side of rice). Gai-lan greens in oyster flavored sauce.
Q dream car?
. A roomy station-wagon with air conditioning.
Q Where would you like to travel next?
. I want to see modern Singapore. The first time I went, it was quite a run-down country. After that, I would like to visit China and Hong Kong again. I haven’t been there in over a lifetime.
Q Who is your favorite music artist?
. It would have to be music from China from the 1940s-1950s era.
Q What video game do you like?
. I enjoyed watching my kids play Colecovision or my nephew’s kids playing Nintendo. Other than that, the closest I have come to a computer or computer machine is the one I sat across from, on the desk of the income tax preparer (U & R Tax Services on High Street West).
Q What is a movie that you liked?
. Cool Hand Luke, the one where Newman eats a bunch of hardboiled eggs.
Q What kind of TV shows do you watch?
. Shows like “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” with Marlin Perkins or “The Nature of Things” with David Suzuki.
Q How does Chiu take his coffee?
. One cream and one sugar.
Q Pick a super power.
. Strength
Q You are stranded on a deserted island, what 2 things would you want with you?
. A 2-way radio & my toolbox.
Q I’m buying. Pick your poison.
. I seldom drink. If I had to choose one drink, it would be a glass of wine.
Q Name a book you enjoyed.
. The 1994 edition of the Edmonton published Mah’s in Canada. And… maybe a cookbook. … or Mao’s Little Red Book.
Q What do you have for breakfast?
. Coffee and Toast. The toast is with butter or peanut-butter or jam.
Q If you could time travel for 24 hours where would you go?
. I would take a 24 hour holiday to either Panama or Argentina. The year would be between 1960 – 1965.
Q What is your personal vice?
. I smoked cigarettes for over 30 years. If I could continue smoking, my preference would be Rothmans King Size brand (the one with the blue label not the Rothmans with the red label (mild)).

My no-good son is having difficulty getting Adobe Flash Player plugin on Firefox Portable brower. He got it working successfully, in the past, with Firefox 1.5 Portable (PortableApps.com). The first difficulty was getting it to work on Firefox Portable version 2.0 and version 3.0. The second difficulty was getting a current version of Adobe Flash.
Here is how i helped him.
The key to installing the Flash plugin resides in the location of the plugins folder. This is confusing for the newbie, and I can’t blame him for being mixed up. Sounds easy, right? That is what I thought until I tried to add the plugin and had to navigate to the correct “plugins” folder. Firefox Portable has several folders for “plugins”. Each folder contains a text note telling you to place plugins in its directory. You just have to choose the appropriate directory!
the location of the plugins directory for firefox portable 1.5 is:
…\Firefox\App\firefox\plugins
the location of the plugins directory for firefox portable 2.0 is:
…\Firefox\App\firefox\plugins
the location of the plugins directory for firefox portable 3.0 is:
…\Firefox\Data\plugins
The long method
install plugin in firefox portable 2.0 using this link http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/xpi/current/flashplayer-win.xpi (we did this November 2008)
(we got an error if we tried doing this in firefox 1.5 portable or firefox 3.0 portable.)
These are the resulting files in plugins folder:
NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe 235,936 bytes Modified Saturday, October 04, 2008 8:24:00 PM Adobe Flash Player Helper 10.0r12 v10.0.12.36
NPSWF32.dll 3,695,008 bytes Modified Saturday, October 04, 2008 8:24:00 PM Shockwave Flash 10.0r12 v. 10.0.12.36
npnul32.dll 22,664 bytes default Mozilla Plugin version 1.0.0.15
flashplayer.xpt 856 bytes Modified Saturday, October 04, 2008 8:11:00 PM
Notice that the “Modified” dates of the flash files are similar. Now Firefox 2.0 Portable has flash added. Great!
Next, just copy the above flash files to the respective plugins folder for Firefox 1.5 and 3.0 Portable, and you are finished.

The short method
We found this method on the internet. http://portableapps.com/node/13737 We haven’t tried it, but it sounds easier than our method above. Here is the excerpt.
UPDATED INFORMATION 6/25/08 The NEW Definitive Simplest way Download the file from:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/xpi/current/flashplayer... as indicated on the support page. http://portableapps.com/support/firefox_portable#plugins
BUT... DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK ABOVE DO A RIGHT CLICK, Save link as...
change the extension of the download to flashplayer-win.xpi.ZIP
Unzip it, and there you go, copy the files needed, NPSWF32.dll and flashplayer.xpt , to this directory: [x]:\PATH\PORTABLE\FirefoxPortable\Data\Plugins
and you have Flash for FFP

This is my first post on the blog. blogs are out of favor now but my wife has one so i have to have one too. me too.
One of my first jobs was at the B.C. Fruit grocery store on Main Street, (One block north of City Hall).
I also did odd jobs like painting or maintaining tropical fish.
Al Bonesky was my boss when I worked in the Bar K Grill kitchen of the Royal Hotel, 69 River St W. (We were not aware of the vicinity of the “Al Capone” tunnels at the time. Of course Geraldo revealed the vault was empty. None the less, the tunnels are one of the great tourism attractions of the city.)
